Continuum limits of atomistic energies allowing smooth and sharp interfaces in 1D Elasticity

چکیده
In this paper we present two atomistic models for the energy of a one-dimensional elastic crystal. We assume that the macroscopic displacement equals the microscopic one. The energy of the first model is given by a two-body interaction potential, and we assume that the atoms follow a continuous and piecewise smooth macroscopic (continuum) deformation. We calculate the first terms of the Taylor expansion (with respect to the parameter representing the interatomic distance) of the atomistic energy, and obtain that the coefficients of that Taylor expansion represent, respectively, an elastic energy, a sharp-interface energy, and a smoothinterface energy. The second atomistic model is a variant of the first one, and its Taylor expansion predicts, in addition, a new term that accounts for the repulsion force between two sharp interfaces.

On the passage from atomistic systems to nonlinear elasticity theory for general multi-body potentials with p-growth
We derive continuum limits of atomistic models in the realm of nonlinear elasticity theory rigorously as the interatomic distances tend to zero. In particular we obtain an integral functional acting on the deformation gradient in the continuum theory which depends on the underlying atomistic interaction potentials and the lattice geometry. The interaction potentials to which our theory applies ...
متن کاملA variational model allowing both smooth and sharp phase boundaries in solids
We present models for solid-solid phase transitions with surface energy that allow both smooth and sharp interfaces. The models involve the minimisation of an energy that consists of three terms: the elastic energy (a double-well potential), the smooth-interface surface energy and the sharpinterface surface energy. Existence of solutions is shown in arbitrary dimensions. The second part of the ...
متن کاملThe continuum elastic and atomistic viewpoints on the formation volume and strain energy of a point defect
We discuss the roles of continuum linear elasticity and atomistic calculations in determining the formation volume and the strain energy of formation of a point defect in a crystal. Our considerations bear special relevance to defect formation under stress. The elasticity treatment is based on the Green’s function solution for a center of contraction or expansion in an anisotropic solid. It mak...
متن کاملCauchy–Born Rule and the Stability of Crystalline Solids: Static Problems
We study the connection between atomistic and continuum models for the elastic deformation of crystalline solids at zero temperature. We prove, under certain sharp stability conditions, that the correct nonlinear elasticity model is given by the classical Cauchy–Born rule in the sense that elastically deformed states of the atomistic model are closely approximated by solutions of the continuum ...
متن کاملConstruction and Sharp Consistency Estimates for Atomistic/continuum Coupling Methods with General Interfaces: a 2d Model Problem∗
We present a new variant of the geometry reconstruction approach for the formulation of atomistic/continuum coupling methods (a/c methods). For many-body nearest-neighbour interactions on the 2D triangular lattice, we show that patch test consistent a/c methods can be constructed for arbitrary interface geometries. Moreover, we prove that all methods within this class are first-order consistent...
